After graduation, he sailed the Great Lakes as a Merchant Seaman, until he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in October, 1948. He was discharged in September of 1952, as a Staff Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean War and played four years of service football. He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League, lifetime member of the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans. He went back to the Great Lakes as a seaman after the Marines.
