He was always willing to help and was looked to by many in his life for his leadership. Merrill was a veteran of World War II. He served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. In an area known as "Purple Heart Valley". Merrill was a familiar face. On one specific mission, he was chosen to lead a group of men to recover ammunition from trucks stranded in German controlled Purple Heart Valley. Merrill and his team had to quietly work their way down to the stranded truck, transfer all of the ammunition out, and bring it back - under mortar fire. Merrill successfully lead his men out with NO casualties. This is just one of the many of his contributions to all of us. For this particular mission, he received a Bronze Star. #1929 |
